We are concerned to learn that holidaymakers who have been struck down by a holiday illness whilst staying at the Marbella Corfu Hotel in Greece may be suffering from a range of pathogens, with Salmonella being the most likely.
While online reports have suggested that holidaymakers have contracted an ‘aggressive virus’ at the 5 star luxury complex, we have seen little evidence to support this claim this. Our travel specialists have spoken to one family whose daughter contracted gastroenteritis having ingested the harmful Salmonella bacteria while staying at the Greek hotel.

Salmonella gastroenteritis is normally contracted by consuming meals that have been contaminated with the harmful strain of bacteria, which usually causes the classic symptoms of food poisoning, including intense stomach cramps, profuse diarrhoea, fever, and occasional vomiting. These symptoms usually develop between 12 and 72 hours after you’ve been infected, and can last for several weeks. If you suffer from severe or prolonged symptoms of this nature, it’s important to consult a doctor as soon as possible.
The cause of Salmonella
There are more than 2,500 strains of the Salmonella bacteria, many of which can live in the gut of animals including, chicken, cows, pigs, birds and lizards. Produce such as eggs, poultry, pork and a variety of dairy products commonly carry the bacteria, and fruit and vegetables can also become contaminated if they have been in contact with livestock, faecal matter or sewage.
The catering staff preparing food at the Marbella Corfu Hotel should make sure that they wash their hands and clean kitchen equipment thoroughly to prevent the spread of Salmonella from meat to other produce in the kitchen, a process known as cross-contamination. You can also become infected from contact with individuals suffering from diarrhoea, as well as direct contact with lizards, cats and dogs.
Thomson illness complaints
The Marbella Corfu Hotel is a partner of UK tour operator Thomson, who we suspect may be receiving complaints regarding illness, as well as about the food being served at inadequate temperatures. Salmonella is a bacterial pathogen which is eliminated from produce by raising its temperature above 67°C, and the growth of this common holiday bug can also be restricted if produce is refrigerated and stored correctly. Thomson should be taking steps to ensure that these simple food hygiene processes are adhered to, to avoid a potential food poisoning outbreak.
The odds of being sick at this hotel are relatively low, but even so you should be wary of poor hygiene practices. Salmonella is indicative of a hygiene problem and possible lapses in concentration in the kitchen. While this incident of suspected Salmonella food poisoning may be an isolated occurrence, those affected are entitled to claim compensation from Thomson in the UK, due to The Package Travel Regulations 1992.
