Holidaymakers have taken to TripAdvisor to report on what appears to be unsanitary conditions at the ClubHotel Riu Bachata, where potential lapses in hygiene and food safety standards may have culminated in guests suffering from food poisoning.

Caribbean resort – ClubHotel RIU Bachata

The ClubHotel RIU Bachata is situated on the beach in Maimon Bay inside the RIU Resort along with the ClubHotel RIU Merengue. This five star all-inclusive hotel is promoted by UK tour operator TUI UK Limited, under their First Choice and Thomson Holidays brands. They advertise the Dominican Republic resort as featuring “2 pools and 3 restaurants, plus a packed portfolio of activities and watersports” making it an ideal holiday choice for any family or, as they claim; “perfect for your wedding day.” Unfortunately it appears that a number of problems have resulted in some holidaymakers being less than satisfied with their trip to the Caribbean.

Cockroaches and fumigation in the Dominican Republic

While some problems with insects and the local wildlife can be expected at resorts located in warmer climates, some can be quite surprising, as was the case for one such TripAdvisor reviewer, who had a bit of a shock at the RIU Bachata. While attended a wedding she noticed that there were “roaches by the salad section and the dessert area” and as a result of this she “did not eat any of the fruits or desserts.” She goes on to say that “there were roaches crawling up the curtains in the dining area and in the bathroom” of her room. When her friend reported the problem to the hotel management they were told that they would “fumigate tomorrow“, something which would be a shock to any holidaymaker, especially so if you were having your wedding at the RIU Bachata.

Reported food and hygiene problems at the RIU Bachata

While there are some positive reviewers for the Dominican Republic hotel, some of the guests have made comments about a range of issues at the RIU Bachata, including problems with the following:

  • Contaminated food
  • Food left uncovered
  • Flies on the food
  • Birds flying around the restaurant
  • Cockroaches found in the food
  • Rats around the pool
  • Uncooked meat/burgers

While some of these problems have left reviewers concerned, some guests have reported that they have suffered from a stomach illness that spoiled what should have been a pleasant break in the Caribbean.

Warnings left by reviewers

Reviewers have warned unsuspecting prospective holidaymakers of their experience at the RIU Bachata, saying that you should “be careful when they go here“, as they suffered from “a stomach bug which has lasted over 2 weeks“. Although they say that the RIU Bachata is a “lovely hotel” they need to “sort out the flies on the food and bring the food up to scratch before more people get sick“, advising future guests to “check what they’re eating and make sure their food has been cooked thoroughly“.

What could these problems mean to you?

It is worrying to hear of these issues at the RIU Bachata, but if these problems are as prevalent as reviewers on TripAdvisor say they are, it’s not surprising that multiple holidaymakers are suffering from stomach illness. Flies, birds, cockroaches and rats can carry a range of harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites that could result in some of the symptoms being reported, many of which could be caused by the following pathogens:

These types of illnesses can be contracted by eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated by contact with infected animals and insects. Flies and cockroaches particularly are naturally attracted to faeces, and because of this they can carry faecal matter on their legs, which can then be transferred onto your food. If this is ingested, you’ll consume any viruses, harmful bacteria or parasites present, and it’s likely that you’ll suffer from a bout of food poisoning. Equally rats, birds and some insects can spread disease through their own droppings, which many species may leave on your food involuntarily.

How do I know if I’m suffering from food poisoning?

If you suffer from food poisoning you might exhibit mild or severe symptoms, but as a general rule if you have it you’ll soon become aware as the symptoms are notoriously unpleasant. Generally food poisoning symptoms include the following:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps

If you suffer any of these symptoms for more than 24 hours while staying at a hotel such as the RIU Bachata, it’s important to see a medical professional.

  • Hotel RIU Naiboa
