Senior Holiday Claims Specialist
The Dominican Republic has become extremely popular with British holidaymakers over the last few years, with a range of cheap flights and hotels to choose from, and with concerns over terrorism in Egypt and Tunisia the appeal of the Dominican Republic as an alternative destination has only increased.
As expected, the increase in the number of visitors to the Dominican Republic has been met with an increase in the number of reported illnesses contracted at all-inclusive resorts, with several high profile illness outbreak complaints gaining world-wide media attention.
- Have you visited the Dominican Republic recently for a holiday?
- Have you contracted Salmonella or another bacterial illness?
- Do you want to make a complaint about your ruined break abroad?
If your answer to these questions is ‘yes‘, then you might be in a position to make a claim for compensation.

Your Right to Claim Compensation
Tour operators such as First Choice, Thomson, Cosmos, Thomas Cook and Olympic Holidays have a duty to ensure that you do not become ill during your break abroad. The Package Travel Regulations 1992 allow you to bring a claim against your tour operator within the UK for any illness that you have suffered whilst on your package holiday that was caused by their negligence.
We handle many claims every year for our clients who have returned from the Dominican Republic having suffered a holiday illness. Many of our clients are very happy with the outcome of their case upon receiving their compensation, and below you can read what some of them have said about us and the service we provide:
“Brilliant! Made the whole process stress free, simple and got us a great result. Very Professional.” – Mrs Sarah Bishop
“Professional, prompt, organised, outstanding service! Direct and honest. I will definitely recommend you.” – Ms Dawn Spalding
Salmonella in the Dominican Republic
Salmonella food poisoning is one of the most common illnesses contracted by holidaymakers in the Dominican Republic, particularly at popular large outdoor barbecues that can be found at many of the all-inclusive resorts in the region. While a resort barbecue can seem perfectly safe, eating food prepared at these events can pose a risk to your health, due to meat being served undercooked or handled incorrectly.
Eggs also pose a risk, and if you’re on holiday in the Dominican Republic it’s advisable to ensure that food containing eggs has been thoroughly cooked and doesn’t contain raw eggs. Drinking the local tap water in the Dominican Republic should also be avoided if possible, as Salmonella can be present.

If you have fallen ill with Salmonella or other illness whilst on holiday in the Dominican Republic you may consider taking the following steps:
- Collect the details of any other guests who were also ill, as their evidence can support your complaint and you could pursue a group claim.
- Complain to your tour operator representative if you become ill during your stay.
- Seek medical treatment whilst in resort and when you return home to the UK.
- Contact us we can help you with your complaint.

Limitations on Making a Claim
You have 3 years to make a claim for compensation for a salmonella illness contracted in the Dominican Republic, and because we provide a free no-obligation consultation and can handle your case on a ‘no win no fee‘ basis, it’s better to find out if you have a claim before you run out of time.
Because we offer ‘no win no fee‘ terms you won’t have to pay us any money unless your claim is successful, so if your holiday in the Dominican Republic has been ruined by Salmonella food poisoning, or any other illness, then you should strongly consider making a complaint against your tour operator.
