Salmonella is the most common cause of food poisoning amongst holidaymakers travelling to Spain, followed by e.coli and campylobacter. It is usually found in chicken, meat, unpasteurised milk, and eggs particularly on the outside of its shell. It can survive in food if it is not cooked properly.
Salmonella can also grow in food, especially if the temperatures are right. If a small number of bacteria are present in a food, they will multiply rapidly unless it is maintained above 65 degrees C or it is chilled. Holidaymakers returning from the Sol Aloha Puerto infected with salmonella should be extremely careful with personal hygiene because they could infect other members of their family or, indeed, other travellers who comes into direct contact with them.
The salmonella bug is very virulent and can spread quickly especially if a carrier does not wash their hands after going to the toilet, leaving bacteria on their hands and the surfaces they touch.
Holidaymakers returning from the Hotel Sol Aloha Puerto claim that other guests were ill, including a number who were hospitalised with Salmonellosis. The symptoms reported include profuse diarrhoea, headaches, fever, stomach cramps and nausea.
Some guests report feeling sick on their return to the UK. Holidaymakers should be aware that when they swallows bacteria that cause food poisoning, there is a delay (incubation period) before symptoms commence. This is because most holiday bugs that cause food poisoning need time to multiply in the intestine. The length of the incubation period depends on the type of bacteria and how many are swallowed.

Simpson Millar’s specialist travel lawyers are advising holidaymakers to seek advice from their doctor upon their return to the UK and to request stool samples.
